Summary
Pentecost Sunday, as many Sundays of special Christian events, can often be misunderstood. I received and email expressing gratitude for explaining Pentecost to them. Pentecost is simply the birth of the Christian Church, Day 1.
Fifty days after the Resurrection of Christ, and shortly after Jesus ascended into heaven, the Holy Spirit descended on those gathered in Jerusalem for a particularly important custom. It was the end of harvest season. Devout Jews from the many nations all around Israel made pilgrimage to the Temple to offer the first fruits of their harvests.
Jesus had told the disciples to remain in Jerusalem after his departure until the Holy Spirit arrived.
On Pentecost, tongue-shaped flames of fire appeared over their heads. The Galileans (disciples), having little education and lacking elegant vocabulary began to speak in the languages of all nations in Jerusalem, the crowd was amazed that they could understand. What was the message in all these languages?
It was sharp and convicting. Peter stood up and addressed the crowd – You crucified your Savior, your Messiah, who took upon himself all the sins of the world. His resurrection demonstrates the love of God for each of us.
As Jesus promised, he would be leaving but would send the Comforter to be with all of us at all times, to take his place as our teacher, healer, and counselor.
Three thousand people believed the message of Jesus and believed on him as their Lord and Savior. As they traveled back to their native countries, imagine the conversations along the way; the message delivered in a rippling effect to all nations surrounding Jerusalem.
Pentecost is the birth of the Christian church. The Church which places faith and hope in Jesus Christ, and lives a new life, noticed by all whose paths they cross.
Happy Birthday, Church!
